The new facility is 70% completed and is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2019
Malaysia Airports is pleased to share that the construction of the new dedicated processing centre (CIQ) at KL International Airport’s (IATA Code: KUL) second terminal, klia2 is on track and progressing well. It is near 70% completion and expected to be fully operational by May this year. The CIQ is yet another initiative by Malaysia Airports to help departing crew of its airline partners particularly AirAsia optimise its procedures to score better on-time performances.
Most importantly, with the establishment of the CIQ and the projected efficiency that it will provide to the airlines, passengers can expect more new routes and increased flight frequencies. AirAsia Group, for example, in anticipation of the completion of the CIQ has launched new service routes to Fukuoka and Chiang Rai early this year.
Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin, the group chief executive officer of Malaysia Airports commented on the aggressiveness and commitment of the airlines to increase its routes and connectivity. He said, “Our friends at AirAsia handled more than 85,000 outbound flights at klia2 last year which was a 9.9% increase from 2017. As for 2019, its performance till date has seen 14,000 outbound flights which is also an increase of 1.4% of the same period in 2018. Therefore, we are confident that the new CIQ will serve our airlines well.”
klia2 served 31.9 million passengers in 2018, an increase of 5.3% as compared to the previous year. It also welcomed two new airlines, Indigo Airlines and Citilink Indonesia.
The CIQ is a tripartite collaboration between Malaysia Airports, the Immigration Department of Malaysia and the Royal Malaysian Customs and the facility will be equipped with integrated processes to ease mobilisation of the departing airline crew to the boarding gates and increase their punctuality that will then encourage faster turn around time for the aircraft.
