When planning a trip to Germany, city-hopping is a big part of the consideration, no matter your interests. After all, once you’ve made the journey, you may as well see everything the country has to offer! We’ve mapped out a route easily traversable by train, bus, or even bike if you’re feeling adventurous. Satisfy your need for retail therapy, cultural immersion, and beautiful landscapes before ending your day with white wine straight from the Rhine.
Looking to shop till you drop? With Singapore Airlines now flying straight into Düsseldorf Airport three times daily, fashionistas can go straight from the airport runway to the catwalk in a matter of hours. This metropolis has cemented its status as a fashion city, boasting a variety of retail options from the high-end luxury retail stores of the elegant Koenigsallee or “Kö” boulevard, to the districts of Flingern and Unterbilk with their creative youthful fashion.

Art and history buffs will be drawn to nearby Cologne, which houses the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, the Cologne Cathedral. Classified a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, it houses major art treasures, including stained-glass windows that date as far back as the 13th century. Those looking for a true slice of history can head to Aachen for the oldest church in Northern Europe. Similarly designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Aachen Cathedral is a Gothic masterpiece whose windows reach an impressive 27 metres in height.
Wine connoisseurs can make a beeline further South to Mainz, Germany’s wine capital. This city is known as the gateway to the Rheinhessen – the country’s largest wine-producing region, and to nearby Rheingau. The regions’ cool, dry climes make it ideal for producing white wines such as Reisling. Eco-friendly growing practices are widespread, so enjoy your tipple with a clear conscience. This quiet town is also the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg — inventor of the well-known Gutenberg printing press.
Looking to connect with Nature? Step straight into a picture postcard when you visit the region around Lake Constance, or “Bodensee”. Guests can fully immerse themselves in the Alpine atmosphere by hiking and biking along the region’s many trails, or by rafting and boating on the lake. As the lake itself shares a border with Switzerland and Austria, guests will even be able to visit 3 countries in the same day. After all, once you’ve made the journey to Germany, you should experience the country (and those nearby) to the fullest!
