Santan, the world's first restaurant brand to offer inflight food on the ground, today celebrated its first anniversary with major milestones amidst challenging times.
Following the official franchise certificate awarded by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) in September, Santan has established five new franchise outlets in the Klang Valley excluding outlets at Mid Valley and Sunway Pyramid as well as another two outlets slated to open before the end of 2020. Three cloud kitchens have also been established in Cheras, Shah Alam and Sri Kembangan to further cater to the rising demand in the Klang Valley, especially through delivery service.
Since the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) was implemented in November, Santan saw an 80% growth in its delivery service, compared to 40% during the MCO (March - May 2020). Over 385,000 total meals were sold throughout the year, including its popular Ready-to-Eat range.
While the Santan franchise business gives young entrepreneurs a launchpad to start their career in the F&B industry, Santan continues to support the local communities and SMEs around the country, contributing towards the Buy Malaysian Products campaign, with the launch of ‘Santan Food’ in September - a specially curated space at its flagship outlet in Mid Valley Megamall featuring locally-made and sourced products such as snacks, rice, coffee, tea and more.
As part of its ongoing expansion plan, Santan rebranded T&Co to Santan Cafe on 26 October. Located in between Mid Valley and The Gardens bridge, the outlet serves Malaysian and Asean-blend beverages and light snacks.
Catherine Goh, General Manager of Santan said: “It has been a challenging yet rewarding year for all of us at Santan. We’ve grown from one to nearly ten outlets, set up cloud kitchens and introduced new concepts to the store while continuing to support the local communities around us by sourcing our ingredients and products locally, rehiring Allstars and creating more job opportunities. We have also been continuously feeding the needy through our collaboration with the Food Aid Foundation and it is a privilege to give back to the communities we serve.
“Certainly, all of this would have not been possible without the support from the Santan team - from our kitchen staff, servers, baristas, franchisees to cloud kitchen operators and our customers, who have been fans of our delicious Asean-inspired dishes since day one. As a token of appreciation, everyone can enjoy their favourite Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak for RM1* today! Thank you for bringing Santan another step closer towards becoming Asean’s first fast-food chain and we look forward to serving the rest of Malaysia and more of Asean next year.”
Recently, and to commemorate the first anniversary, Santan has partnered with local lifestyle artisan, Bingka, to produce handmade merchandise featuring themes derived from its iconic ‘Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak’ that is uniquely Santan. Made by the local communities including homemakers, home tailors and students, the merchandise is now available online at santan.com.my and from all seven Santan outlets.
