- Global Apparel Brand to Join Hands with Customers to Collect Pre-Loved UNIQLO Clothes for Underprivileged People Across the Nation
- UNIQLO invites Malaysia to celebrate the spirit of giving this Ramadan by donating their pre-loved UNIQLO clothes for the underprivileged communities throughout the country.
Under the initiative 10,000 Ways to Help, the Japanese apparel retailer aims to collect 10,000 pieces of clothing and distribute them to homeless centers nationwide in collaboration with the Malaysian Relief Agency, a humanitarian organization, and the Kuala Lumpur Homeless Transit Centre, where UNIQLO established its first Clothing Corner last October. Collection has already begun at recycling boxes stationed in all UNIQLO stores, where customers can head over and drop their pre-loved clothes to be repurposed with their new wearers. Ten donors will be invited to join the official clothes donation ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Homeless Transit Centre.
“Our LifeWear philosophy is to provide simple, high quality clothing that is built to last; and because of this, it is common among our customers to have UNIQLO clothes that they have grown out of or no longer use as frequently, but are still in good condition,” explained Yuki Yamada, CEO of UNIQLO Singapore and Malaysia. “Our 10,000 Ways to Help initiative offers our customers the opportunity to repurpose their clothes in a meaningful and sustainable way, that is not only in line with the festive season’s practice of showing empathy for those who are less fortunate, but also UNIQLO’s recycling efforts,” he added.
According to Yamada, the collection of second hand UNIQLO clothing is part of the retailer’s global Re.UNIQLO initiative to collect clothing that is no longer needed by customers and give them new life and new value. In Malaysia, collected clothing is sorted before it is distributed to people in need, including refugees and local underprivileged communities, while clothing deemed unwearable is recycled into alternative fuels.
Yamada also announced that UNIQLO Malaysia will top the 10,000 pieces of clothing collected from customers with 10,000 AIRism masks to be donated to the homeless communities in Malaysia. “With COVID-19 still affecting communities, we want to ensure vulnerable homeless people can protect themselves with a face mask, which continues to be a daily essential,” he said.
Besides collecting second hand clothes and donating them with AIRism masks to homeless people, UNIQLO is also offering customers some sustainable ways to give out green packets this Raya.
Reusable Raya Packets Giveaway
With the intent of reducing paper usage, these sustainable green packets are made by students and refugee mothers at Sew X Dignity, a social enterprise under Dignity for Children Foundation that offers high-quality, lovingly sewn goods made out of upcycled and local fabrics. Profits go directly back to Dignity for Children Foundation to support the education and transformation of underprivileged and marginalized youths.
UNIQLO customers will receive a reusable Raya packet for free with a minimum purchase of RM300 at any UNIQLO retail stores and online store from April 30 to May 6.
