Dark fantasy thriller Nenek Bongkok Tiga opens 2023 for Viu Malaysia

Cast will be heading off on a multi-country road tour promoting the show, which will include Kuantan and Johor Bahru of Malaysia and Jakarta of Indonesia

Viu starts 2023 with its latest Viu Original title, Nenek Bongkok Tiga, featuring a star-studded cast directed by award-winning director Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim. After the success of titles such as Seribu Nina and She Was Pretty in 2022, Nenek Bongkok Tiga will be Viu Malaysia’s opening tentpole for 2023 and the first Viu Original series to have a road tour in two countries.

After the premiere in Kuala Lumpur today, the cast will make their way to Kuantan on 10 February, Johor Bahru on 17 February and Jakarta on 8 March. Each location will feature an on-the-ground premiere, merchandise giveaways and a social media contest offering participants the chance to win vouchers for a Prism+ TV worth RM3,299. Further details of these events will be announced on Viu Malaysia’s social media.

Mr Kingsley Warner, Country Manager of Viu Malaysia, said, “This series is a good start to 2023 for Malaysian Viu Original and builds on the momentum we have established after releasing five shows across different genres last year. With talented up-and-comers and experienced veterans coming together for this show, Nenek Bongkok Tiga is sure to be a treat for fans of dark fantasy!”

“Nenek Bongkok Tiga will be the first Malaysian Viu Original with a road tour, which will include a visit to Jakarta, Indonesia. We believe that this series has cross-market potential due to the large fan base and popularity that the series’ cast members have in Indonesia,” Warner added.

Shooting for Nenek Bongkok Tiga took place over 10 weeks at various locations around Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak and Johor. The series features extensive green screen work, which was shot at Iskandar Malaysia Studios in Johor, and several ambitious set builds to create the surrealistic, fantasy world of Nenek Bongkok Tiga.

The series brings back the successful pairing of director Yusry Abdul Halim and producer Zurina Ramli, who had previously teamed up for Viu Malaysia’s adaptation of She Was Pretty, which won two national awards at the 2022 Asian Academy Creative Awards.

Nenek Bongkok Tiga brings together both young and experienced talent in the Malaysian acting scene, including Hun Haqeem, Meerqeen, Sara Ali, Syafie Naswip, Syazwan Zulkifly, Ashraf Muslim, Fimie Don, Sara Mack Lubis, Rykarl Iskandar, alongside well-loved screen icons Sherie Merlis and Datin Sofia Jane. The dark fantasy thriller will premiere two episodes on the Viu platform on 9 February, followed by a new episode each week on Thursdays.
