Do you know that an adult need at least 7 hours of sleep each night? Our sleep quality is just as important as the number of hours of sleep we get. It can affect our brain performance, mood and health. Sleep is an essential aspect of our daily lives, providing numerous benefits for both our physical and mental well-being. In recent years, research has shed light on the significant impact of sleep on various aspects of our health.
Emotional Regulation
Good sleep quality allows our brain to regulate emotions effectively. Lack of sleep can lead to heightened irritability, increased stress levels, and difficulty managing emotions, potentially contributing to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.
Cognitive Function
Sleep deprivation negatively impacts cognitive functions like decision-making, problem-solving, and concentration. These cognitive deficits can further contribute to mood disturbances and affect our ability to cope with daily stressors.
Blood Pressure Regulation
Sleep helps regulate blood pressure levels, and chronic sleep deprivation can lead to hypertension (high blood pressure). Elevated blood pressure is a significant risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
Inflammation and Heart Disease
Lack of sleep can trigger inflammation in the body, contributing to the development of heart disease. Inflammation is associated with atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and increased risk of heart attacks.
So how does the Galaxy Watch5 track your sleep pattern? With a motion sensor, the smartwatch detects when you’ve stopped moving around in bed. When you go to sleep, your body and brain go through various stages – awake, REM (rapid eye movements), light sleep, and deep sleep.
You can get the results of last night’s sleep and see the breakdown of these stages, with explanations of what happens during each stage in the Samsung Health app. After a week, the app will assign you one of eight animal symbols that represents the type of sleeper you are! Your sleep score is generated to give you a simple way to get a sense of how well you’ve slept. The higher your score, the better your sleep quality.
It’s crucial to have all this actionable data at your fingertips (or rather your wrist!), not only to learn about yourself, but importantly, to know how you can change your bedtime habits to have a great night’s rest.
