Following the immense success of the 2023 Satun Langkawi Fishing Thru Andaman event, the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), in partnership with the Tourism & Sports Department of Satun Province, hosted this year's tournament where 210 anglers from Malaysia and Thailand took part. The epic fishing showdown showcasing angling prowess and uniting enthusiasts from Malaysia and Thailand was graced by Tunku Mahkota Kedah, Tunku Shazuddin Ariff Sultan Sallehuddin and Che Puan Nur Julie Ariff.
The tournament featured prized catches, including Giant Trevally, Grouper, Red Snapper, Golden Snapper, Barracuda, Goldband Snapper, Diamond Trevally, Cobra Snakehead, Rainbow Runner, Queen Fish, Narrow Barred Mackerel, Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, and Sweetlips.
The tournament which took place from May 17th to 19th 2024, began at the stunning locale of Satun, Thailand, and concluded with the weigh-in in Langkawi. The total prize pool was RM50,000. The Pran Tah-Le team from Thailand secured the RM20,000 prize for topping the Heaviest Fish Team category with a catch of 48.2 kilograms. Their captain took home RM1,500 for the best captain category. From Malaysia, LADA’s Welfare and Sports Club won second place with a 35.7 kg catch, earning RM5,000, while the Public Works Department team took third place with a 33.5 kg catch, receiving RM3,000.
Dato’ Haslina Abdul Hamid, CEO of LADA, expressed excitement about the event, highlighting its role in fostering collaboration and cultural exchange between Langkawi and Satun.
“This year, we opened spots to Malaysians outside Langkawi and international anglers, ensuring an inclusive experience. The tournament not only promotes Langkawi as an angler's paradise but also strengthens international ties through a shared love of fishing. In line with LADA's Strategic Plan, this event aims to elevate Langkawi as a premier event destination, attracting visitors and media representatives to support the tournament.”
Dato’ Haslina added, “The event went exceptionally well and as planned. We hope the anglers had fun, and with every competition, everyone goes home a winner, whether with prize money or the catch. The most important thing is the spirit of the sport and the competition to come back to Langkawi next year.”
