A Strong Local Supplier Ecosystem Vital For Sustainable Growth, Says Fahmi

A robust local partnership ecosystem, characterized by deep collaboration between companies and their suppliers, will create a strong foundation for future advancements in information and communications technology (ICT).

In his keynote address at the Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) Supplier Ecosystem Convention 2024, Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil praised Huawei Malaysia for its pivotal role in fostering this ecosystem and its appreciation for their suppliers.

The Communications Minister stated, “A strong local partner ecosystem is integral to sustainable growth and development, and I am impressed by Huawei’s long-standing commitment to working with Malaysian companies. Their commitment to using 100 per cent local companies, including Bumiputera-owned suppliers, illustrates a deep understanding of the importance of local partnerships.”

He emphasized that the digital economy is increasingly becoming the cornerstone of our national growth. In 2023, it contributed over 23% to Malaysia’s GDP, with expectations to reach 25.5% by 2025.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in shaping Malaysia's digital landscape.

“In particular, education and skills development are vital components of our digital economy ecosystem. I commend Huawei for their efforts in bridging the gap between education and industry, ensuring our workforce is equipped with the skills needed for future job markets,” he said.

Additionally, Fahmi noted that Malaysia has nearly universal 4G coverage, alongside high rates of internet usage, mobile phone ownership, and internet traffic. With sustainable digital services and broad digital participation achieved, he said that Malaysia is now poised to launch its second 5G network.

“We are aligning our actions with the MADANI Government’s commitment to good governance. The dual network 5G model is designed to break the existing monopoly in 5G services, promote healthy competition within the telecommunications sector, and ensure the public has access to high-quality and affordable 5G services,” he added.

Huawei Malaysia’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Simon Sun, expressed sincere gratitude towards the company’s suppliers, recalling how its network of local suppliers came together during the height of the pandemic to ensure timely delivery of products and services.

“We were able to remain steadfast, meet every demand, and more importantly, nurture and grow the relationships we have with our customers and business stakeholders,” he said during his welcome speech.

He also reaffirmed Huawei Malaysia’s dedication to collaborating with local suppliers, stating, “Huawei Malaysia believes in our slogan, ‘In Malaysia, for Malaysia’. That is why we are proud to say that we believe in using 100% local suppliers.”

“We believe this is the right way to build a resilient ecosystem. Having a valuable, consistent, and sustainable chain of suppliers and partners enables companies like us to navigate new realities and meet the demands of the day,” he added.

Mr. Simon Sun further emphasized that cultivating digital talent is crucial to building the local ecosystem. He highlighted that this is why Huawei has significantly increased its investments in digital talent development, committing 20 million ringgit over the past three years in the country.

The convention, themed “Together Towards a Sustainable and Digital Malaysia,” attracted over 500 guests, including key industry players, stakeholders, decision-makers, partners, and industry experts. The event provided a dynamic platform for exchanging innovative ideas and expertise across critical ICT domains.

Fifty-eight awards were presented to Huawei Malaysia’s local partners and suppliers for their excellence and outstanding achievements. Among the companies recognized for their exceptional leadership were Jalur Milenium Sdn Bhd, MTK Communication Sdn Bhd, B-Band Communications Sdn Bhd, C&C Universal Engineering Sdn Bhd, Advance Industrial Solutions Sdn Bhd, and East Field Technologies Sdn Bhd.

During the event, Huawei Malaysia shared an overview of its key ongoing projects, provided insights into market prospects, and identified potential areas for collaboration with its partners.
