In celebration of Malaysia’s 67th Independence Day and Malaysia Day, Malaysia Airports proudly introduces ‘Warisan Kulinari Kita’ at KL International Airport (KLIA), a tribute to the nation's diverse culinary heritage. This initiative highlights traditional dishes that unite Malaysians from all backgrounds, offering travellers a taste of our rich gastronomic traditions. Through this campaign, Malaysia Airports brings the nation's unique flavours and cherished cooking techniques to the world, reflecting the 2024 Merdeka and Malaysia Day theme, "Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka."
From 20 August to 20 September 2024, visitors and travellers will be treated to several exciting activities centred around Rumah Kampung Limas, a life-sized traditional kampung house taking centre stage in the Departure Hall at Level 5, KLIA Terminal 1. The display area will be divided into sections showcasing the culinary heritage of Malaysia.
Additionally, visitors will be delighted to explore the Herbs Garden (Taman Herba), where they can discover the use of natural and locally sourced ingredients such as butterfly pea flower, pandan, and hibiscus in traditional and modern cuisines. Live cooking demonstrations featuring a variety of Malaysia’s foods using these herbs will be offered, with informational boards available for those interested in learning more about Malaysia’s rich variety of food ingredients. Malaysia Airports' food and beverage tenants will also be part of this joyous occasion by featuring specially curated items on their menus.
Moreover, for the first time ever, a paddy field installation will be exhibited within the airport, showcasing rice as Malaysia’s staple food in KLIA T1. This display adds a touch of nature’s beauty to the bustling airport environment, and by incorporating a variety of traditional rice-based dishes from across the country, such as Nasi Lemak and Nasi Kerabu (Malay), Chicken Rice (Chinese), Nasi Biryani (Indian), and Nasi Kombos (Sabahan), the installation vividly demonstrates how rice unites the nation's diverse ethnic groups.
“Malaysians’ deep passion for food unites us, and this Independence Day and Malaysia Day, we proudly showcase our culinary treasures on the world stage while empowering local F&B businesses. As the gateway to the nation, we’ve reimagined our retail landscape to offer an immersive cultural experience that captivates travellers and locals alike. Through strategic marketing, we amplify the voices of local retailers, making them integral to creating joyful, unforgettable memories aligned with our commercial reset strategy,” said Hani Ezra Hussin, Senior General Manager, Commercial Services for Malaysia Airports.
Other exciting activities in the ‘Warisan Kulinari Kita’ campaign include food tasting sessions, interactive cooking workshops, and recipe sharing. Visitors will have the chance to actively engage and fully immerse themselves in the rich culinary experience and cultural tapestry that makes Malaysia unique.
Malaysia's diverse culinary landscape serves as a unifying force, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of its various communities. Food in Malaysia is more than just sustenance, it embodies the nation’s history, traditions, and social fabric, creating connections that bridge cultural differences through everyday local meals and festive celebrations.
